The ‘Subordinate Services Commission’ (SSC) was started during the year 1975 by the Government of India and has its headquarters in New Delhi. The SSC works with the objective of recruiting personnel for different posts in the varied government-run departments, subordinate offices, and ministries. Previously, the SSC was recruiting only for Group-C (non-technical) staff for the various government agencies.
Then, during the year 1977, the body was renamed as the ‘Staff Selection Commission’ (SSC) and started recruiting ‘Group-B’ officers as well. The SSC works in collaboration with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). The DoPT has two members, one Chairman, and one Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations.
Across India, the Staff Selection Commission Exam is conducted by the SSC. And candidates for different posts in government agencies are selected via this open and departmental exam. And the successful candidates are offered positions in the various government agencies.
The pay scale of the employees who get jobs in SSC organizations can expect salaries ranging from 9300 to 34800, which is inclusive of Rs 4200 as grade pay. And the age limit that is fixed for the given positions is between 18-27 years.
Many youngsters who are interested in securing government jobs apply for the SSC exam. This is because government jobs offer a variety of benefits. Job stability and accommodation facilities are some benefits that are extended to government employees. However, due to a large number of applicants, the competition is intense among them. For this reason, the aspirants are advised to prepare well for the various selection rounds.
Candidates with varied educational backgrounds are invited to apply for jobs with SSC departments. Ranging from matriculate-level to graduate-level to postgraduate-level candidates, they all are eligible to apply. Even so, they must meet the given eligibility norms of the positions they are applying to.
Different Type of Jobs in SSC Departments
Upon qualifying the SSC exam and various screening rounds, the applicants receive job offers for the stipulated Group-B posts and all non-technical Group-C positions that come under the ministries of the Government of India. The SSC exam is convened all across the country, with candidates appearing at various exam centers.
The aspirants can avail jobs in different categories after clearing the screening process. They can secure jobs at positions such as lower division clerks, assistant and subordinate officer, clerical services, Stenographer (including both Grade-C and Grade-D), CBI Sub-Inspectors, Income Tax Inspector, Divisional Accountants, Assistant Enforcement Officers, Junior Engineers, Tax Assistants, and Statistical Investigator (Grade IV).
Future prospects of Jobs in SSC Departments
The candidates who are working with SSC departments can avail promotions to higher offices as well. Through departmental selections, Group-D employees are promoted to Lower Division Clerk grades at the various government departments.
Additionally, stenographers, upper division clerks can receive promotions in different government offices. However, the educational background of the candidates is considered during the selection process. For this reason, they must study the eligibility criteria of the jobs and apply accordingly.
Exams conducted by the SSC
The SSC operates as a DoPT subordinate office and holds several competitive exams for recruiting eligible candidates in the SSC organizations and departments. The various exams that SSC conducts are studied below.
1) Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGEL)
To be eligible for the CGEL exam, the applicants have to complete their graduation from accredited boards. The CGEL examination is a multi-tiered one, which includes Tier-I, Tier-II, an online test, and a personal interview round.
Through CGEL, various personnel are recruited for departments such as Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), sub-inspectors in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), among others.
2) Tax Assistants
The government-managed CBDT and CBEC departments require tax assistants. To select candidates for these positions, the Tax Assistant exam is conducted.
3) Statistical Investigator (SSS) grade IV
Upon qualifying this exam, the aspirants can work as Statistical Investigators with the Department of Statistics.
4) Junior Engineer (Civil & Electrical)
Aspirants who are vying for junior engineer posts with the Military Engineering Service, CPWD, or the Department of Posts can apply for this exam. However, they have to secure a diploma in Civil/Electrical/Mechanical Engineering to be eligible for the exam.
5) Junior Hindi Translator (CSOLS)
The CSOLS exam is held to recruit junior translators in the CSOLS cadre. The eligible candidates for this exam are those groups who have secured a Master’s degree in any discipline. Further, they should have chosen English or Hindi as one of the electives in the degree programs.
6) Junior Hindi Translator (for Subordinate offices)
For Junior Hindi Translator positions, the candidates should have a Master’s degree in a valid discipline and one of their electives in the degree courses should be English or Hindi.
7) Section Officer (Audit/Accounts/Commercial Audit)
After clearing this exam, the shortlisted applicants receive placements in audit and accounts departments.
8) Deputy Field Officer (Cabinet Secretariat) Examination
For positions as Deputy Field Officers in the Cabinet Secretariat, the aspiring candidates have to appear for this exam.
9) Sub Inspectors in CPOs
Graduates are eligible to apply for this exam. If they qualify for the screening rounds, they can work as Sub Inspectors in Central Police Organizations (CPOs).
10) Combined Higher Secondary Level
This exam is convened for hiring employees under Group-C and Group-D. They can get jobs at positions such as Lower Division Clerks, data entry operators, and stenographers.
