    In India, an array of jobs in the Police department can be applied for. These include Inspector jobs, Constable jobs, and Sub-Inspector jobs. Also, the aspirants can apply for jobs in their home states. Only they must satisfy the eligibility criteria of the stipulated positions. Under Police jobs in India, the jobs that come under the Indian Police Service (IPS) are most sought after. The IPS offers senior-level positions in the Indian Police Force – including at the State and Centre.

    Examinations for Police Jobs

    As part of the application process of Police jobs in India, the aspiring candidates should give the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) examination that is conducted every year. Over 1500 vacancies are filled through this medium.

    Upon clearing the exam and other selection rounds, the shortlisted applicants are offered positions in various institutions such as the Central Industry State Force, the Central Bureau of Investigation, and the Central Police Organization. They can expect salaries ranging from 3.6 LPA to 12 LPA.

    In addition to the SSC exam, many other exams are held for recruiting candidates in the police forces in India. These include the examinations that are carried out by the Ministry of Defence, Indo Tibetan Border Police, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Union Public Service Commission.

    Besides, the various Indian states conduct state-level exams for inducting candidates.

    The positions and salary vary as per the varied exams. Among the posts that the applicants can apply for via exams include for the ones of Constable, Head Constable, Sub-Inspector, and Deputy Superintendent of Police.

    More so, for positions in the IPS, the candidates should appear for the Civil Services Exam (CSE) that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts every year. The CSE is conducted for recruiting candidates in different services such as IRS, IFS, IPS, and IAS.

    Additionally, police officers are promoted to IPS officers based on their performance in the security forces.

    Under IPS, the candidates can hold positions in varied departments such as Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Home Guards, Crime Branch, Traffic Bureau, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).

    Eligibility Criteria for Police Jobs

    The minimum qualification for appearing for the SSC and CSE exams is that the applicant should complete graduation. However, the varied jobs differ in eligibility norms.

    Further, they satisfy the age criteria of the different jobs to be eligible to apply.

    The CSE is held in 3 phases that include Prelims, Mains, and Personal Interview. Also, medical tests are carried out after the Interview rounds.

    Training for IPS Officers

    IPS officers are given probationary training. The two training centers are Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad. They are confirmed into services after they successfully complete probation.

    Mid Career Training is provided to IPS officers during their service period as well.

    The Police Division that comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has the responsibility of managing the IPS and framing policies for cadre management.

    Entry-level IPS officers receive a basic monthly pay of Rs 56,100; the highest rank officers are offered Rs 2,25,000. Other allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA) and Travel Allowance (TA) in addition to basic pay, are offered as well.

    During their career span, the IPS officers can avail a hike in salary and promotions too. The overall performance of the officers is assessed and Annual Performance Appraisal Reports are drafted, after which the promotions are decided upon by the authorities.

    Women in the Police Force in India

    Previously, only males were inducted in the police forces in India. Nonetheless, now, women are invited to apply for positions in various police departments. Women can apply for both desk jobs and field jobs.
